Malta and Cambodia have signed a memorandum of understanding that paves the way for the adoption of children from the Asian country.

The memorandum was signed during a press conference by Michael Farrugia, minister for the family and social solidarity and Vong Sauth, social affairs minister of Cambodia.

Cambodia had stopped all adoption to foreign countries in 2011. This memorandum of understanding will put Malta among the first European countries to bring children for adoption from Cambodia.

Farrugia recalled how about a year ago, he had brought up the issue of adoption in a meeting with Cambodian authorities.

Sauth highlighted the cooperation between the two countries and vouched Malta would be among the first countries to be able to adopt children from his country, once the process was finalised.

Cambodia has signed a similar agreement with Italy and Spain.
